Earlier this month, auctioneers Antiquorum sold a very rare Rolex Submariner 5513 with an Explorer, Underline dial.

The dial features Arabic numbers at 3, 6 and 9, usually found on an Explorer, as well as an underline at 6 O'clock.

Many consider the 5513 the benchmark Submariner. But with that said, this reference has had many different incarnations: matte dials, underlines, gilt dials, explorer dials and glossy dials.

The 5513 was produced between the early 60s through to the late 80s. To find an Explorer dial Submariner is rare enough, but one also featuring an underline is truly something special.
Though never officially confirmed, many watch experts believe the underline represents the transition from radioactive radium luminous material to tritium.

Antiquorum stated this is the only the third ever of its' kind to be available on the market publicly . It has a serial dating back to 1964.

It has now been sold for 93,750.00 CHF; a little shy of £63,000.
