Sandoz. A Massive Rare Niello Gold & Silver Keyless Lever Five Minute Repeater Chronograph Full Hunter Pocket Watch C1890

Dial: The fine white enamel dial with slim Roman numerals outer minute track with Arabic five minute intervals with subsidiary seconds dial at six o'clock. The unusual original minute and hour hands with blued steel centre second chronograph hand and original seconds hand.

Case: This rare and important case with a Niello enamelled front cover depicting a lion and a snake fighting in the jungle with plants foliage palms and flowers with a vacant cartouche below. The reverse cover is also niello enamelled with a snake in jungle surroundings of palms ferns foliage and flowers and a birds nest with five eggs in it. The front and back covers are made of silver. The middle portion of the case is made in 18ct rose gold with the slide for the repeater on one side and the chronograph button on the other side. The inner cover is silver and engraved with a full description of the movement

Movement: The excellent fully jewelled Swiss keyless lever movement with the chronograph workings visible on the backplate as are the hammers and gongs which chime clearly, the hours and five minutes. The movement has the crest of the Sandoz family with the motto in Latin Sine Dolo meaning Without Guile.

This watch is indeed rare and important in so far as the scenes and the niello enamelling being intact. This watch would make a great present for an adventurer or an explorer, a really superb piece.
